Edmonton Hardwood Refinishing

What is Hardwood Refinishing?

Hardwood refinishing is the process of using a drum sander, edger, and other specialty hardwood tools to strip down the stain, lacquer or smoked finish of your original hardwood floor. Then, when the hardwood has reached its “naked” state, all voids and gaps are filled with a wood fill polymer. Next the floor is sanded with multiple abrasive levels until it reaches the desired finish to apply stain. The hardwood is then treated with 3 coats of stain and a clear coat.

This is why the process is often referred to as “sand and finish.” This allows recolouring of the floor depending on the design choices and goals for the home, or having a very neutral un-tinted view of the natural wood with a more natural finish I.E Linseed Oil.

What are the Benefits of Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Edmonton?

The biggest draw to refinishing existing hardwood is the character, look, and cost of the original wood. Products are far more expensive in the solid hardwood market and harder to source, meaning a replacement of older solid hardwood floors will be very expensive and sometimes impossible depending on the species, manufacturer, and style. It is also possible to refinish the hardwood without removing and reinstalling trim and baseboards meaning you don’t have to have a finisher and painter involved, again saving time and money. This also leaves the home in its period-specific finishes and that is often sought after by homeowners or prospective buyers.

Why Should You get a Hardwood Refinish?

If the floor has excessive gapping, or checking. The floor has surface scratches and the finish is becoming uneven. The colour has faded or just isn’t appealing with your current aesthetic.
