The Low-Maintenance Floor — Done Right

One of the best things about luxury vinyl plank flooring is how little work it takes to keep it looking great. No refinishing, no waxing, no seasonal treatments. But “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance” — and in Edmonton, where winters bring salt, ice melt, and dry air, a simple routine makes a real difference in how your floor holds up over the years.

This guide covers everything you need to know about cleaning and maintaining LVP flooring in Edmonton — by season, by situation, and by habit.

Your Everyday LVP Cleaning Routine

Daily or As Needed: Sweeping and Vacuuming

Grit, sand, and debris are the biggest enemies of your LVP’s wear layer. Small particles act like sandpaper underfoot — over time, they create micro-scratches that dull the finish. A quick sweep or vacuum every day or two (especially in high-traffic areas) is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your floor.

Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum on the hard floor setting. Avoid vacuums with a rotating beater bar — these can scratch the surface. A microfibre dust mop is ideal.

Weekly: Damp Mopping

Once a week, damp mop with a pH-neutral floor cleaner diluted in water. Wring your mop out well — you want the floor damp, not wet. Standing water won’t penetrate a quality waterproof LVP core, but it can work its way into seams and potentially affect the subfloor over time.

Good cleaners for LVP include products specifically formulated for vinyl or hard surface floors. Avoid anything with wax, oil soap, or abrasive ingredients — these leave residue that dulls the finish and can make the floor slippery.

What to Avoid

  • Steam mops — the heat can warp or delaminate the wear layer over time
  • Abrasive scrubbers or steel wool — will scratch the surface
  • Bleach or ammonia-based cleaners — can degrade the wear layer finish
  • Wax or polish — LVP doesn’t need it and it creates a build-up that’s hard to remove
  • Wet mopping without wringing out — excess moisture pooling at seams is avoidable

Seasonal Maintenance for Edmonton Homes

Winter: Salt, Ice Melt, and Dry Air

Edmonton winters are hard on floors. Ice melt and road salt tracked in on boots contain chemicals that can dull or etch your LVP’s finish if left sitting. Place high-quality absorbent mats at every exterior entry point and shake or replace them regularly. Wipe up salt residue with a damp cloth as soon as you notice it.

Dry winter air — Edmonton’s indoor humidity can drop to 20–25% on the coldest days — is less of a concern for LVP than it is for hardwood. LVP doesn’t contract or gap in dry conditions. That said, running a humidifier to keep indoor humidity between 35–50% is good for your home overall, and slightly better for your floor’s underlayment and subfloor long-term.

Spring: Mud Season

Mud season in Edmonton is short but intense. The good news: dried mud doesn’t stain LVP. Let it dry, sweep it up, then damp mop. Don’t try to wipe up wet mud — you’ll spread it further. A good doormat system at entrances dramatically reduces how much mud reaches your floors.

Summer: Sunlight and Heat

Prolonged direct sunlight can cause LVP to fade over time, especially in rooms with large south-facing windows. Use window coverings during peak sun hours, or consider UV-filtering window film. Most quality LVP has reasonable UV resistance, but no floor finish is completely immune to fading.

Edmonton summers can also bring brief periods of high humidity. LVP handles this without issue — unlike hardwood, which can swell and buckle in humid conditions.

Handling Spills and Stains

LVP is highly stain-resistant, but prompt cleanup is always the best approach:

  • Water and most liquids: Wipe up immediately with a dry or damp cloth — no lasting damage.
  • Food and grease: A small amount of dish soap on a damp cloth, followed by a clean water rinse, works well.
  • Pet accidents: Wipe up promptly. For lingering odour, a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner applied to the surface (not soaked in) neutralizes effectively.
  • Scuffs from shoes or furniture: A small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cloth usually removes these cleanly.
  • Stubborn stains: A manufacturer-approved LVP cleaner or a small amount of mineral spirits on a cloth — test in an inconspicuous area first.

Protecting Your LVP from Furniture and Heavy Use

  • Place felt pads under all furniture legs — sofas, dining chairs, bed frames. Replace them periodically as they wear down or accumulate grit.
  • Use furniture coasters or cups under heavy items like pianos or appliances.
  • Avoid dragging furniture across the floor — always lift or use furniture sliders.
  • If using a rolling office chair, place a hard floor chair mat underneath — repeated rolling compresses and can eventually mark the surface.

What About Scratches?

Minor surface scratches on LVP are normal and expected over time, especially in high-traffic areas. They’re usually most visible in raking light (light hitting the floor at a low angle). The best defence is a thick wear layer upfront — a 20 mil wear layer will show far fewer scratches than a 6 or 8 mil product over the same period.

Unfortunately, scratches on LVP can’t be sanded out the way hardwood can. Deep scratches that penetrate the wear layer may require individual plank replacement — one advantage of a floating floor installation is that planks can often be replaced without disturbing the entire floor.

How Long Should LVP Last in an Edmonton Home?

With proper care, a quality LVP floor should last 20–25 years in a residential setting. Commercial-grade products in lighter-use environments can last even longer. The biggest factors in longevity are wear layer thickness, installation quality, and consistent basic maintenance.

According to Natural Resources Canada, flooring longevity in Canadian homes is closely tied to how well it’s maintained through seasonal humidity and temperature changes — another reason LVP’s climate resilience is such a genuine advantage.
