Toucan flooring in Edmonton

Toucan is a practical brand. Its laminate and its vinyl are both presented as waterproof, which matters in the rooms where Edmonton families most often replace floors: kitchens, entries and basements. And the collections are organized by simple series codes, so once you've found a look you like it's easy to see what sits next to it in the range.

Toucan describes its laminate as "naturally handcrafted waterproof collections." The laminate is 12 mm thick, and Toucan offers it in a range of surfaces, from matte and glossy to handscraped and embossed-in-register textures, in colour families from greys and browns to beige, tan and natural tones.

Laminate is a good fit if you want a wood look with a hard, durable surface on a main floor, hallway or bedroom. It usually feels more like wood underfoot than vinyl does.

Toucan calls its vinyl "high quality waterproof vinyl plank flooring," and offers it in a range of SPC collections and thicknesses, in black, brown, grey and natural colour families. Vinyl is the floor we recommend most often for rooms that see water, pets and kids, including basements, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Waterproof doesn't mean preparation can be skipped. In a basement we check the concrete first, because a slab with a moisture problem needs dealing with before any floor goes down.

Both are good choices for a busy home, and the right one depends on the room. If the room stays dry and you want the most wood-like feel, compare the laminate. If it sees water, vinyl is usually the better pick. A few questions make a visit faster and the choice easier. Which rooms are you doing, and do any of them see water, such as a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room or basement? Do you have pets or young kids? Is the subfloor wood or a concrete slab, and does any part of it squeak or dip? Are stairs part of the job? Bring rough room sizes or a floor plan if you have one, and a photo of the room in daylight. With those answers we can usually narrow a wall of samples down to three or four that genuinely fit.
