Vinyl is the floor we recommend most often for rooms that see water. In Edmonton that usually means:

• Basements: a waterproof floor over concrete, after we've checked the slab.

• Kitchens and entries: spills, snow, salt and boots in winter.

• Bathrooms and laundry rooms: splashes and the odd overflow.

• Homes with pets: the "any pet, any mess" idea Mohawk builds the line around.

Waterproof doesn't mean the room can skip good preparation. Water still needs somewhere to go, and a slab with a moisture problem needs dealing with first. We check before anything goes down.

If you like the look of wood and the room stays dry, laminate such as Mohawk's RevWood is worth comparing. If the room sees water, vinyl is usually the better pick. Lay both side by side in the showroom and the choice is often obvious.

A floor looks finished at its edges and on its stairs. Mohawk offers what it calls Performance Accessories to complete the look. We'll plan transitions, trims and stair nosings with you so the floor flows from room to room.

A few questions make a visit faster and the choice easier. Which rooms are you doing, and do any of them see water, such as a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room or basement? Do you have pets or young kids? Is the subfloor wood or a concrete slab, and does any part of it squeak or dip? Are stairs part of the job? Bring rough room sizes or a floor plan if you have one, and a photo of the room in daylight. With those answers we can usually narrow a wall of samples down to three or four that genuinely fit.

Our winters bring snow, salt and grit through the front door for months. A waterproof vinyl floor copes with melting snow far better than wood, but grit is still the enemy of any finish, so a good mat inside the door makes a real difference. Vinyl also stays stable through the dry heating season, which is one more reason it's so common in Edmonton entries, kitchens and lower levels.
